Millions of people use drugs every day whether they are used for medical purposes or they are used illegally. When people are addicted to them and are under the influence of them, it can cause people to think and do irrational things. Drug addictions can become dangerous and life-threatening. They can be life-threatening because the body can only take so much so when people take too much they overdose and need to seek medical attention. Although drugs can be used to save someone’s life and for medical purposes, they can also ruin someone’s life and even be the reason for their death. Is the benefit of drugs worth the price of possibly ending up addicted?
People tend to get addicted to the drug they take because they feel good when they take them to go through the high. A “high” is when a drug makes the brain release dopamine which can cause a happy feeling, which people tend to like and then begin to use the drug more and more often. When drugs are used often and are craved then the person using them is most likely addicted to the drug. At times drug abuse starts from a prescription drug that was prescribed by a doctor. The drug is either taken irresponsibly or the dose the doctor prescribed was too high. Other times people are introduced to drugs by their friends or in the streets. The most addictive illegal drug or “street” drug is cocaine. People with other addictions that seek medical attention go after about 10 years of being addicted but with cocaine, people go in “after 2 to 3 years, sometimes even 6 months”, but there are some people that do not seek medical attention (Holden). Those people tend to overdose and sadly end up dying. Drug addiction leads to death, but can also lead to other problems, such as poor mental, physical and emotional health. Drug abuse can also increase the rate of crime, lead abusers to “harm others, steal, or go to jail” (Gale). Drugs mess with the brain and can change the way people think, which is why people are more likely to steal, hurt others, or even end up in prison.
Another reason for getting addicted to drugs is when athletes take steroids to increase their “physical abilities” (Gale). Athletes tend to like the results after the use of steroids, so they begin to use them more often and end up addicted to steroids. Some people start using a drug as a one-time thing, to try something new. Those new things often become an addiction.
Millions of people use drugs as an everyday routine. Although drugs are helpful and have the ability to save people they also have the ability to completely demolish someone’s life. Drugs can be the reason for death, terrible health, stealing, or other issues. Therefore drugs are both useful and terrible, it all depends on who uses them or how they are being used.
